Who Was D.L. Moody?
A shoe salesman turned world evangelist — used mightily by the HOLY SPIRIT

Early Life & Conversion

Born February 5, 1837, in Northfield, Massachusetts, Dwight Lyman Moody came to faith at age 18 through his Sunday school teacher Edward Kimball. He moved to Chicago in 1856 as a shoe salesman and began teaching Sunday school in the slums, soon leaving business entirely for full-time ministry.

Transatlantic Revivals

Beginning in 1872, Moody partnered with singer Ira D. Sankey for legendary revival campaigns across Britain and America — London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, New York, Chicago, Boston — drawing audiences of tens of thousands and leading hundreds of thousands to saving faith in JESUS CHRIST.

Institutions Founded

Moody founded the Northfield Seminary (1879), Mount Hermon School (1881), the Moody Bible Institute (1886), Moody Church, and the Bible Institute Colportage Association (now Moody Press) — institutions that continue to train Christian workers to this day.

Literary Legacy

Though not a trained writer, Moody's sermons were transcribed and published in over 15 volumes. His books on prayer, the HOLY SPIRIT, Heaven, the overcoming life, and Scripture characters remain devotional classics widely read 125 years after his homegoing on December 22, 1899.
